The term burn describes the action of creating a CD or other recordable discs. You can identify a burned or recordable disc by looking at the bottom of the disc. Recordable discs like those shown in the picture have a green or purple tint to them.

What type of disc can be burned?

Any blank disc or recordable disc can be used in a burner to create a new disc or copy an existing disc. Keep in mind that a standard disc and a closed disc cannot have information burned to the disc.

What is the difference between ripping and burning?

When you’re ripping a disc, you are taking data from that disc. When you are burning a disc, you are putting data onto the disc.

Why do burned discs look different?

When discs are made in bulk (e.g., thousands need to be made), they are pressed and not burned. This process is done because pressing a disc is much faster than burning a disc. Home users cannot press discs because of the expensive equipment that’s required.
