Named to resemble “archive,” Archie is considered to be the first search engine. The search engine script was written by Alan Emtage, Bill Heelan, and Mike Parker at McGill University in Montreal, and released on September 10, 1990. Unlike a web search engine, Archie was used to find files stored on anonymous FTP sites.
