An INI file is an initialization file for software programs to store configuration information about the computer or program. Important .ini files such as the system.ini and win.ini are needed for earlier Microsoft Windows to operate properly.
Today, the use of .ini files in Microsoft Windows and Windows programs are mostly replaced by the Windows registry. However, files such as the desktop.ini file still exist in many versions of Windows today.
