Apple introduced the Apple AirPort on July 21, 1999, as a way to connect wireless devices to a computer, enable wireless printing, access to a music library in iTunes, and Internet sharing.
The advantage of AirPort is that a user does not need a home network to share a printer or music library. The AirPort system acts as the home network. A home network would also not be required to share Internet between computers. Only one computer needs to connect to the Internet, and additional computers access the Internet via AirPort Express devices.
