Alternatively called flight mode, airplane mode is a mode on devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets), that disables all wireless communications without having to turn off the device. During a flight, airlines may request electronic devices be turned off or switched to airplane mode to prevent interference with the airplane’s communication systems.
While in airplane mode, a cell phone cannot send or receive texts, send or receive calls, or access the Internet. Tablets also cannot access the Internet while in airplane mode. Other devices placed in airplane mode cannot utilize any wireless communication signals.
Offline, Phone terms
Actions like playing a game or using an app that doesn’t require access to the Internet still works while the device is in airplane mode.
