With gaming, a player or PC (player character) is a character in a video game that’s controlled by a real person, using a keyboard, mouse, or game controller. All actions performed by a PC are initiated by a real person. All characters in a game not controlled by a human are considered NPC (non-player characters).
When referring to a program, a player commonly refers to a program capable of playing a sound file, movie clip, animation, or another file. For example, Windows Media Player and VLC are both example of media players.
