Phase change is a step performed by CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD-RW drives. Phase change involves changing the material on the CD or DVD from an amorphous state to a crystalline state, causing the surface to reflect light differently. By changing how the surface reflects, it is possible to create 0’s and 1’s (binary) on the disc.
