PCS may refer to any of the following:

  1. When talking about more than one PC (personal computer), “PCs” or “PC’s” may be used. See our PC term page for further information on the PC.

  2. The term PCS, short for personal communications service, is a set of digital capabilities that facilitate user profile management and broader coverage for cellular phones and pagers. More specifically, it provides users with an all-in-one wireless phone, messaging, paging, and data service.

Other PC acronyms mentioned on the above link may also be pluralized using the same rules mentioned above.

PCS also has applications with some fixed communications methods, such as digital voicemail on a landline. PCS incorporates GSM and CDMA radio networks.

PCS categories

PCS is divided into three categories:

  • Unlicensed - 1920-1930 MHz frequency band. Used by the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) for short-range wireless communications.
  • Narrowband - 900-941 MHz frequency band. Used for wireless phone and data transmission and voice and text-based paging services.
  • Broadband - 1850-1900 MHz frequency band. Used for wireless phone and fax, high-speed data transmission, and PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants).
