With hardware, a name refers to a description of a device. For example, your computer has a computer name that identifies it on a computer network. A name in this context should not be confused with a MAC or an IP.
When talking about software, a name is a description of any object. For example, each file on your computer have its own file name.
In Excel, a name or named cell is a description of a cell. For example, cell C2 could be given the name of “total,” which could be referred to in any other cell function. If cell D2 had the function “=total,” the value of cell D2 would be the same as C2.
The Internet domain suffix .name is short for individual and family names.
In Excel use the shortcut key Ctrl+F3 to open the Name Manager. In the Name Manager, you can create, edit, and delete any Excel names. Once a name is created, you can use the shortcut key F3 to insert any name.
