A Klout Score is a measure of a user’s activity and utilization of social media. The score is a number between 1 and 100. It represents an aggregate of the user’s social media activity, including the size of the user’s networks, and their activity. The social media networks include sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and LinkedIn. Additional data is retrieved from Wikipedia and Instagram usage and contributions. The score is determined by aggregated data, used by a user to determine the ranking of their social influence on the Internet.
The Klout Score is put together by Klout, Inc. The company has their own website, and a mobile application. The company was founded by Joe Fernandez and Binh Tran in September 2009. The initial success of the company and their Klout Score system prompted Microsoft to invest in Klout in September 2012, which gave their Bing search engine to access Klout’s influence technology. The investment by Microsoft also allowed Klout to utilize Bing’s search data for their scoring algorithm.
On May 25, 2018, Klout shut down.
