A burner may refer to any of the following:

  1. The term burner describes a CD-R, CD-RW, or DVD-R drive capable of writing data to a CD or DVD.

The picture shows a CD-RW drive and a CD-RW disc in the drive tray. With this drive, disc, and software, a user could save (burn) files to the disc.

  1. A burner or burner phone describes a cell phone used temporarily and discarded. Burner phones are used for people who don’t want or cannot afford a cell phone contract or don’t want to be tracked.

A burner drive is required to burn a disc. However, once a disc is burned, it works in almost all optical disc players capable of reading discs. For example, a burned CD-R can be read in a CD-ROM drive.
