Developed by Ted Hoff, Masatoshi Shima, and others at Intel and released on November 15, 1971, the 4004 was the first processor with a 4-bit register and 740 kHz clock speed. Smaller than a human thumbnail, the 4004 had 2,300 transistors with 10-micron spacing, capable 60,000 OPS (operations per second). It cost $200.00, while possessing as much computing power as the ENIAC computer.
