When pressing the power button there is no response from the laptop.
If your computer shows no signs of powering up, the battery could be the main problem. Firstly make sure your adapter is tightly plugged in and the light is on. As well as making sure the adapter is connected to the laptop during this process. If the laptop only powers up when the adapter is plugged in, regardless of how long it has been charging, then the battery is at fault.
Either no audio comes out from the speakers or it is distorted in some way, static or cracking noises.
Try testing the audio through the computer speakers first, then test it using headphones. If the audio is only distorted while listening through headphones, the audio jack or the headphones themselves may be the problem. Audio that keeps cutting in and out is usually a sign of a loose audio jack, so make sure that the audio jack is fully inserted in the computer and it is a tight.
If the audio sound is distorted while listening through the laptop’s speakers, the audio driver may be the problem. This will require you to update the driver for the sound card in the laptop. Using this website, http://support.toshiba.com/drivers, you can search Toshiba Portege and all relevant drivers will show up.
If you are not using the headphone jack on the laptop and instead using the built in speakers then it may be that the speakers are broken or otherwise damaged and need to be replaced.
The power lights indicate that the laptop is on and you can hear that it is running, but the screen remains black.
Make sure that the display on your computer is not accidentally disabled. If it is, to fix this, press one of the “Fn” keys in the lower corner of the keyboard and then press “F2.” If the display was indeed disabled by accident, this will re-enable the display. If this does not fix the problem, repeat this instruction one more time, hold down the Windows key, and then press “P” twice. The computer may have been previously set to “Projector mode;” doing the action above will convert it back to “Computer Only.”
If after attempting to turn the screen on it still remains black then the screen may be damaged or broken and need to be replaced.
The keys on the keyboard will not respond, are missing, or are sticking.
If the entire keyboard fails to respond, you may need to replace the entire thing. Try using a guide like this one Lenovo Essential G560 Keyboard Replacement in order to replace the keyboard. Most laptops involve the same technology regarding keyboards.
When keys can’t be pressed, there may be something below the physical key holding it up that is causing the problem. To fix this, remove the key and make sure nothing is stuck below it. You may need to wipe off the area underneath and clean it. Once it is sufficiently clean, snap the key back into position and see how it works.

Laptop gets extremely hot while in use during basic tasks or shuts down abruptly.
A common problem regarding overheating in laptops is usually that there is excessive dust and/or other materials stuck in the vents or fan. To fix this, use a can of compressed air to carefully blow any dust or materials off of the vents and fan.
Your laptop may not have enough adequate contact between the heat sink and main processor. This is usually caused by a lack of thermal paste, or that there is air stuck in between the two components. To fix this problem, completely clean off any of the old thermal paste, then apply a bead of new thermal paste directly in the center of the processor. Finally, gently push the heat sink back in place and tighten screws in order to lock down the heat sink.
If you do not hear the fan running during use then it is likely that the fan may be broken or defective. In this case, you will have to replace the fan within the laptop.
