What you need

Step 1

              Disconnect the spark plug wire               
  • Before you begin, ensure that the mower is powered down and cool to the touch.
  • Grab the plastic housing at the end of the spark plug wire and pull firmly to disconnect it.

Step 2

              Chock the rear wheels               
  • Chock the rear wheels to prevent the mower from rolling during service.
  • If the blades are extremely dirty, you can clean them using the washout fitting so the bolts on the underside of the blade guard are accessible.

              Lift up the deflector               
  • Lift up the plastic deflector.

              Remove the grass bag               
  • While holding the deflector up and out of the way, lift the grass bag handle away from the mower to detach it.
  • Remove the grass bag.

              Cut the zip ties               
  • Cut and remove the zip tie holding the cables together near the middle of the handle.
  • During reassembly, replace this zip tie.

              Find the end of the traction cable               
  • Tilt the mower onto its side, propping the handle up with a block of wood.
  • Locate the end of the traction cable underneath the mower, attached to the transmission.
  • The end of the traction cable is attached to a silver spring, and they come out as one unit.

Step 8

              Unhook the traction cable spring               
  • Use a pair of needle nose pliers to unhook the traction cable spring from the transmission.

              Remove the plastic locking mechanism               
  • Use a pair of needle nose pliers to depress the two wing clips on the plastic lock.
  • This can be a difficult area to see and reach. Use a flashlight if need be.
  • This plastic locking mechanism may break during removal, so be sure to use a new traction cable assembly during reassembly.
  • Once the wing clips are depressed, pull the plastic lock away from the transmission.

Use a pair of needle nose pliers to depress the two wing clips on the plastic lock.

This can be a difficult area to see and reach. Use a flashlight if need be.

This plastic locking mechanism may break during removal, so be sure to use a new traction cable assembly during reassembly.

              Remove the bottom end of the traction cable               
  • Pull the traction cable out through the cutout in the frame.

              Remove the cable from the cable guides               
  • Unhook the traction cable handle lock.

  • Remove the black silicone cap covering the nut on the switch and upper cable guide assembly.

  • Use a 7/16 inch socket or wrench to remove the nut securing the kill switch and upper cable guide assembly.

  • Unclip and remove the upper cable guide from the handle.
  • Unroute the cables from the cable guide.

  • Slide the metal cable tube out of the slot on the upper cable guide.
  • Remove the traction cable from the cable guide.

              Remove the traction cable               
  • Remove the traction cable assembly.
  • During reassembly, ensure the cable has adequate slack and operates as expected before tightening the bolts on the cable guides.
