Squeaking, grinding, or sputtering noises are coming from computer

Problems can occur when a computer is powered off incorrectly, dropped or damaged. The hard drive may also start to fail when you hear clicking or grinding. To resolve these issues you may need to replace your hard drive. See Hard Drive Replacement Guide.

The fan can be knocked out of place or rub against a wire while spinning. You will be able to hear a buzzing, grinding, or other noise coming from near the slits where air is normally blown out. The fan may need to be put back into place or if damaged, replaced. See Fan Replacement Guide.

The computer is much hotter than normal while running programs and you don’t feel air blowing out of the side of your computer

If no air is moving from the side of the computer and you can’t hear the fan running, try restarting your computer. If this doesn’t help, try cleaning/clearing it with compressed air. If this also fails, the fan may have moved out of place and needs to be put back into place or replaced. See Fan Replacement Guide.

When batteries start getting old or damaged, it is common that they can get hotter than normal or run out of power when not plugged in. You can use compressed air around the fan to ensure the battery is not just heating up due to this. If the computer continues to run hot you may need to replace the battery. See Battery Replacement Guide.

When the computer is not plugged in, it does not turn on when you click on the power button or the computer shuts off after a short period of time

Make sure that the battery has been charged sufficiently before taking it off of the adapter.

If the computer does not come on or shuts off quickly after charging, your battery may be faulty. Follow this link Battery Replacement Guide to see our guide on how to replace the battery.

The computer or applications take a long time to load and open

You may have too many applications or too much data for your RAM to handle quickly. It must slow down to accommodate the magnitude of work without failing. You can delete or close any applications that you don’t use often to relieve the RAM. Another option is to replace the RAM with one that has a larger memory capacity. See RAM Replacement Guide.

No sound coming from computer, very low volume, or crackling audio sounds

Make sure that your volume settings are not on mute or a low volume setting. If it is then click on the speaker icon on the right corner of your lower toolbar and increase the volume. If you could not access the speaker icon, you can click on windows button type “sound” in the search box on taskbar to access the volume setting.

If there is little to no sound coming from your computer despite changing the settings, then test the sound with a pair of headphones. If you can hear well through the headphones, then the cause of your sound issue is faulty speakers. For guidance on how to replace your external speakers, see Speaker Replacement Guide.

The screen has extensive cracks along the surface, the glass has broken off, or the display is flickering, changing colour or blank.

If the screen has cracked or broken to the extent that you cannot see what is being displayed or use the touchscreen then you will have to replace it. See Display Replacement Guide.

If the screen stays blank, changes colour or flickers then the display hardware may be defective and needs to be replaced. See DisplayReplacement Guide.
